Toyota maintenance required light (MAINT REQD)

On many Toyotas, the MAINT REQD light is a mileage counter: it comes on a set distance after it was last reset — commonly 5,000 miles — to remind you that scheduled service is due. It isn’t measuring your oil and it isn’t a fault warning. Book the service, then reset the light once the work is done.

Behavior varies by model and year. Your owner’s manual and Toyota’s Warranty & Maintenance Guide are the authority for your car.

What the light is telling you

Many newer Toyotas use synthetic oil with a 10,000-mile oil change interval, but still list a tire rotation and inspection every 5,000 miles. That’s why the light can come on halfway between oil changes: it’s reminding you of the 5,000-mile visit, not necessarily an oil change.

Older Toyotas, or cars on a severe-use schedule, may need oil changes every 5,000 miles. Check your car’s schedule to see what’s due at your current mileage — our Toyota schedule pages list it by model and engine.

The counter can’t tell what was done. If the light was reset without service, or the last oil change was skipped, it won’t know. Go by your records, not just the light.

How to reset the Toyota maintenance light

Reset it only after the service is done. The exact steps depend on the model and year, so check your owner’s manual. There are two common methods.

Newer Toyotas: through the dashboard menu

  1. With the car on, use the steering-wheel buttons to open the settings menu (often a gear icon) on the multi-information display.
  2. Look for an option such as “Vehicle Settings” and then “Scheduled Maintenance” or “Maintenance”.
  3. Choose to reset and confirm.

Older Toyotas: with the trip button

  1. Turn the ignition on (engine off) and set the display to show the odometer or Trip A, as your manual specifies.
  2. Turn the ignition off.
  3. Press and hold the trip/odometer reset button, then turn the ignition back on while still holding it.
  4. Keep holding until the display counts down or shows zeros and the MAINT REQD light goes out.

If the light stays on after these steps, your model may use a different sequence — the manual or a Toyota service department can confirm it.

ToyotaCare and dealer service

New Toyotas often come with ToyotaCare, a no-cost maintenance plan that covers the routine visits for a limited time or mileage. The details depend on the model year and model, so check your paperwork.

Outside that plan, you can use any qualified shop or do the work yourself without affecting your warranty in the US — just keep receipts showing the work was done on schedule.

Common questions

My MAINT REQD light is blinking. What does that mean?

On many Toyotas, the light blinks briefly when you start the car as the service mileage approaches, then stays on once it’s reached. Either way, it’s a reminder.

The light came on soon after an oil change.

The counter probably wasn’t reset after the service. Reset it, and note the date and mileage of the work.

Does the light mean my oil is low?

No. Low oil pressure has its own red warning light. Still, it’s a good habit to check the dipstick regularly.
