“Severe” is a manufacturer schedule category, not a judgment about how carefully you drive. It may describe repeated short trips, extended idling, towing, dusty roads, or other conditions. The exact definition and affected maintenance items differ by vehicle. Read the normal and special-condition sections of the owner’s maintenance guide before selecting an interval.

Match the condition to the exact item
A manufacturer may attach a condition to one service but not every service. For example, the 2019 RAV4 guide names driving on dirt or dusty roads and towing or heavy loading among its special conditions. A useful rule: do not apply one blanket “severe interval” to every item. Record the condition, the manufacturer’s affected action, and the interval for your particular vehicle.
Think about repeated use, not one unusual trip
